Phil Whitlock

Owner and Lead Therapist

I opened The Sport Clinic in 2023 after a long sporting career in martial arts. I am dedicated to helping clients recover from pain and injury and overcoming obstacles for them to reach their full potential.

My Background

I am a former Taekwon-do English, British, Intercontinental and World Open champion. I started training at the age of 7, represented England aged 14, and continued to do so successfully for 18 years representing England around the world.  I also kickboxed professionally becoming the 2x English Champion. I have trained in Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ and MMA. I ran a martial arts club for 12 years producing 9 black belts and multiple British, and international champions, who I continue to work with on a 121 basis.

Over this time period I have experienced multiple injuries and gained a lot of personal experience in injury rehabilitation alongside the help of sports therapists and physiotherapists throughout my athletic career. After retiring I required a full hip replacement at the age of 32. I have successfully rehabilitated myself back to training. It was during this process that I decided to direct my career into helping people get out of pain and return to their lives. I strongly believe that one of my biggest assets as a therapist and trainer is to be able to talk from experience as an athlete, as well as  an experienced therapists stand point. I qualified at the university of Bath and have gained years of experience working with both professional and amateur athletes as well as non-sporting clients that want to address their pain and injury quickly. The clinic is proudly partnered with The Bristol Flyers. I treat their professional athletes throughout the season to keep them on the court and pain free. I am passionate about working with clients to help them improve their lives and sporting performances by getting them out of pain and back doing whatever it is that they love to do.

Sophie Harrod

Sports Therapist and S&C Lead

I have a first-class degree in Sport and Social Sciences / Sports Management and Coaching from the University of Bath, having taken a year out before the final year of my studies to work as a Strength and Conditioning coach at an international tennis academy in Spain. I have since worked in a few different roles, including as a gym and recovery assistant at Wimbledon Championships. I have  qualifications in Nutrition and Sports Massage, and I am currently undergoing more qualifications in Strength and Conditioning and Personal Training.

I have tried every sport I’ve had the opportunity, generally having a preference for team sports and settling on football and netball. I played netball for the Uni of Bath for the years I studied there, and continue to play competitively for my local club. As a very sporty individual, I’ve had my fair share of injuries, and these experiences have shaped the way I approach (p)rehabilitation, body maintenance and general programming. Personally, I enjoy using a combination of yoga, pilates and strength inspired training; however I believe the success of a programme is reliant on unique tailoring, reassessments and the individual having autonomy and understanding their own body.
